Actually, as Eriol reveals, Clow's and also his own wish is not to be the most powerful magician in the world.

I think Clow is half Chinese and half British. His mother was a Li, famed for being a powerful Taoist family. The most powerful magician the world has ever seen, Clow has mastered and combined the elements of the eastern and western schools of magic, creating his own type of magic. Creator of Yue (the moon and eastern magic), Cerberus (the sun and western magic) and the clow cards.

He died long before Sakura and friends were born but before his death, split himself into two entities, Eriol and Fujitaka. Unfortunately, the split was not as good as he wished and Eriol was created with as much power as Clow.

He is one of the ancestors of the Li-s, and Eriol refers fondly of Syaoran as his little descendant. Well since he is Fujitaka too, I guess that makes him Sakura's dad … in a sense kinda of ^ ^;; … uhm does that makes Eriol Sakura's dad too?

Clow had the uncontrollable ability to see the future which accounts for his odd nature, i.e. life's no fun when you know exactly what's going to happen. He foresaw that Sakura would be his successor and that Sakura would need a little help passing Yue's trials. He thus accordingly left the Moon Bell with Mizuki sensei's family shrine, situated in the very town where Sakura and her family would be moving to at the time she would have to start capturing the Clow cards. His Rashinban (compass) to track down the Clow cards was however, left with his mother's family ... and finally ends up with Syaoran whom he also foresaw would aid Sakura in her quest.

However, as Eriol pointed out, the ending Clow had predicted was changed by Yukito's and Sakura's choices. It is hinted that Clow had expected Yukito and Sakura to be together but as things turned out, Yukito chose Touya and Sakura ended up with Syaoran. He also made sure that Sakura would surpass him in power so she would not suffer his fate, i.e. Sakura could see the future but only if she chose to (unlike him who was forced to know the future). He's a sweetie pie isn't he ... and that's WHY I am so obsessed with him ... HAYANNNN ...

Falling hook line and sinker
Gosh did anyone catch his voice in the anime (I'm talking about the original Jap one) - the first time I heard it, I knew I was pass the point of return, a confirmed case of Clow addiction. And would you know, the color black in Japanese sounds suspiciously like Clow - Kuroi. Coincidence or not?
